Tips and Tricks for Dog Spays

Does a large dog spay on the schedule make you nervous?  We will go through some basic techniques to help with incision placement, how to use your spay hook, exteriorizing an ovary efficiently and tying knots confidently.  All of these will help make your dog spays faster and more efficient.  We will also run through cryptorchid surgery tips and how to handle common complications with spay surgery. 

Dr. Laura Helmueller, a Texas native, graduated in 2001 from Texas A&M veterinary school. She started her career in mixed animal practice, and she soon discovered her passion for surgery and animal welfare. By 2005, Dr. Helmueller had transitioned to a full-time high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter(HQHVSN) surgeon, performing over 50,000 spay and neuter surgeries to date.

Dr Helmueller just opened her own affordable surgery exclusive practice in Austin TX, Ace of Spays.  She also offers an 8hr RACE approved course in increasing surgical confidence, Lickety Snip

Spay and Neuter Wet Lab

This hands on wet lab will provide hands-on experience with spays.  Registration for the wet lab includes Dr. Helmueller's 1 hour program - this is required prior to attending the wet lab.  Lab is limited to 6 participants.  (If the registration is closed, please email [email protected] to be placed on a wait list.  If we have enough interest, we may offer an additional lab section on May 7).

Lab Instructors

 Dr. Becky Debolt – DVM,  Clinical Associate Professor, Shelter Medicine College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tennessee

Dr. Becky DeBolt has been practicing in the shelter realm of veterinary medicine since 2009.  She has worked at large and small shelters interspersedwith high volume high quality spay neuter positions over the years. She is now a Clinical Associate Professor of Shelter Medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine where she delights in bringing the field of Shelter Medicine to veterinary students while simultaneously helping shelters and communities in East Tennessee.  

 


Dr. Sara White, DVM, Spay ASAP

Dr. Sara White is a 1998 graduate of North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, and has worked in mixed animal, small animal,shelter medicine and High-Quality, High-Volume Spay Neuter (HQHVSN) practice. Since 2006, Sara has operated Spay ASAP Inc, a nonprofit MASH-style mobile spay/neuter clinic, and has spayed or neutered over 72,000 animals in Vermont and New Hampshire during that time. While working in spay-neuter, Sara developed an interest in ergonomics, health, wellbeing, and injury in veterinarians and staff, and in spring 2015 completed a Masters of Science in Health Ergonomics from University of Derby (UK). In 2018, Sara was named Veterinarian of the Year by the Association of Shelter Veterinarians. Sara is a co-author of both the 2008 and 2016 Association of Shelter Veterinarians Spay Neuter Guidelines and is the editor of the textbook High-Quality, High-Volume Spay and Neuter and Other Shelter Surgeries. Sara also serves as Treasurer of the VVMA.

 

Dr. Carrie Childs, VMD

Dr. Carrie Childs, VMD, has been practicing veterinary medicine and performing high-quality, high-volume spays and neuters (HQHVSN) since 2016. Her career started in Philadelphia, where she served as the medical director for the city’s largest rescue organization, performing thousands of spays, neuters,and other low-cost surgeries. Dr. Childs moved to Vermont in 2021 and continued to promote and practice HQHVSN surgeries at local shelters. Prior to attending veterinary school, Dr. Childs pursued a degree in education, which has transferred into a passion for teaching HQHVSN and other surgical techniques.
